Business Ideas: What Already Exists That You Can Bring to a New Market?

Welcome back, Freedom Seeker!

You’re doing something most people never do: actually taking the time to find the RIGHT business for YOUR life. And that puts you miles ahead of everyone else who just jumps into whatever sounds trendy.

We’re now on Step 6 of your Right Business Right Lifeβ„’ journey, and I’ve got to tell you, this is where things get really exciting.

You’ve already done the hard internal work in Steps 1-4. You know your values, your strengths, your leadership style, and what kind of life you actually want to build. Then, in Step 5, you connected with problems that fire you up because you genuinely care about solving them: they align with your values and life purpose.

Now? Now we’re going treasure hunting.

πŸ‘€ The Smartest Business Builders Look Around, Not Up

Here’s something I learned after three decades of building, buying, and helping others launch businesses: You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. You just need to roll it somewhere new.

Some of the most successful businesses I’ve encountered – including several I’ve been involved with myself – weren’t revolutionary new inventions. They were smart adaptations of what already worked somewhere else.

Think about it: Is there a product, service, or business model that’s crushing it in another country but hasn’t made it to your area yet? Maybe you’ve seen something work beautifully in a different industry that could translate to yours? Or perhaps you have access to knowledge or resources that most people in your community simply don’t know about?

If any of that rings true, you might be sitting on your next business opportunity.

🌟 When Being an Outsider Becomes Your Superpower

Let me share a story that changed everything for me.

Back in the early days of my entrepreneurial journey, I kept noticing this weird gap. I was born in France, where getting a facial was as normal as getting your hair cut. But when I moved to Silicon Valley? Good luck finding a decent spa treatment anywhere.

Most people saw an oversaturated beauty market. I saw a completely untapped opportunity.

So I did what any sensible person would do. I went back to Paris, got trained in skincare and spa management, and returned with a plan to open a small day spa. People looked at me like I was crazy. “What’s a spa?” they’d ask.

At the time, I had nothing to lose so I trusted what I saw, not what everyone else thought.

I launched that idea anyway. It wasn’t a slam dunk but that business eventually worked because I had something most people didn’t: an outsider’s perspective on what was missing.

That said, today I would do more vetting and planning to avoid the costly mistakes that made getting to profits a long and painful stage.

But I was lucky. Turns out, Silicon Valley was the perfect storm – multicultural professionals, high stress, decent disposable income, and a community of people (especially women) who were ready for something they didn’t even know they needed.

Your different background, your unique experiences, your “weird” knowledge – that’s not a limitation. That’s your competitive advantage.

πŸ’‘ A Great Example: Peet’s Coffee

Back in the 1950s, a Dutch-American entrepreneur named Alfred Peet moved to the U.S. and was shocked by how bad the coffee tasted.

He grew up in the Netherlands, where his family ran a coffee roasting business. He saw an opportunity to bring high-quality, freshly roasted European-style coffee to America, and opened his first shop in Berkeley, California.

He solved a problem that most Americans didn’t even realize they had: bad coffee.

Today, Peet’s Coffee is a household name, and Alfred Peet is known as the godfather of gourmet coffee in the U.S.

πŸ’Ž The Democratization Goldmine

Here’s another pattern I’ve watched play out over and over: some of the best business opportunities come from taking something exclusive and making it accessible.

Think about what you know that others would love to learn. What tools do you use that others don’t have access to? What circles do you move in that have knowledge most people never see?

Take Dr. Andrew Huberman. Guy’s a brilliant neuroscientist, but instead of keeping his knowledge of research locked up in academic journals, he started sharing it with regular people through his podcast. No PhD required, no university access needed – just practical science that actually helps people optimize their lives.

Now he’s built a thriving business while genuinely helping millions of people. That’s the power of democratizing exclusive knowledge.

Or look at Apple in the ’70s. Computers existed, but they were massive, expensive machines that only big companies and universities could afford. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak saw the opportunity to bring that power into people’s homes. Seemed impossible at the time. Now we carry more computing power in our pockets than NASA used to put people on the moon.

What do you have access to that could change someone’s life if they could just get their hands on it?

πŸ“ˆ Reading the Signs (Before Everyone Else Does)

Now, let’s talk about trends, but not the way most people think about them.

I’ve seen too many entrepreneurs chase every shiny new thing that pops up on social media. That’s not trend-watching; that’s trend-chasing, and it’ll run you into the ground.

Real trend-watching is about understanding the difference between:

  • Fads (here today, gone tomorrow)
  • Micro-trends (small but growing in specific niches)
  • Macro-trends (bigger shifts that reshape entire industries)
  • Mega-trends (massive changes that alter how we live and work)

Here’s a painful example: Remember Blockbuster? I watched that whole disaster unfold in real time. They had over 5,000 stores, dominated the market, and then… poof. Bankruptcy in 2010.

Why? They ignored every sign that was right in front of them:

  • High-speed internet was becoming normal
  • People were getting comfortable with streaming
  • Subscription models were proving their worth
  • Data and personalization were becoming powerful tools
  • Even simple innovations like Redbox kiosks were eating their lunch

Meanwhile, Netflix saw the same signs and acted on them. One company vanished, the other revolutionized entertainment forever.

The trends that matter aren’t always the loudest ones. They’re the ones that solve real problems in fundamentally better ways.

Some of today’s game-changing trends that smart entrepreneurs are already building on:

  • Remote work creating new needs for digital tools and services
  • Aging population requiring innovative services and products
  • AI making certain tasks easier while creating new challenges
  • Growing demand for sustainable, eco-friendly everything
  • Niche e-commerce opportunities exploding
  • Food innovation (plant-based, functional, personalized nutrition)
  • Mental health and wellness becoming mainstream priorities
  • Cybersecurity and privacy concerns creating new markets

You don’t need to chase every trend. Just the ones that align with your purpose and play to your strengths.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Your Treasure Map Starts Here

As you work through Step 6, I want you to grab a notebook and really think about these questions:

What have you seen work somewhere else that doesn’t exist in your community yet? Maybe it’s a service that’s common in your hometown but missing where you live now. Maybe it’s a business model you encountered while traveling that could work perfectly in your market.

What knowledge or resources do you have that most people don’t? This could be professional expertise, hobby knowledge, cultural background, or even just connections in certain circles.

What trends are you noticing that could create new customer needs or behaviors? Not what the internet is telling you to notice – what YOU’RE actually seeing in your daily life.

Don’t pressure yourself to have all the answers or a complete business plan yet. This is about opening your eyes to possibilities and letting your curiosity lead the way.

You’re not just looking for any business idea – you’re looking for the one that fits your life, uses your unique advantages, and positions you to build something sustainable and meaningful.

Until then, keep your eyes open and your notebook handy. The right opportunity might already be out there, just waiting for someone with your unique perspective to bring it to life.

After a decade of helping people build and buy businesses, I can tell you this: the entrepreneurs who succeed aren’t necessarily the smartest or the most creative. They’re the ones who pay attention, trust what they see, and have the courage to act on opportunities that others overlook. You’re already proving you have what it takes.

πŸš€ What’s Coming Next

In Step 7, we’re going to get practical. We’ll look at how to match your business ideas with your personal assets – your available time, money, knowledge, and energy. Because the best idea in the world won’t work if it doesn’t fit your actual life situation.

You’ve got this!
