Four Things You Need to Know About Yourself Before Becoming Your Own Boss

Hey there, future business owner!

So, you’re thinking about becoming your own boss? I love that for you! The idea of calling the shots, having more freedom, and making money on your terms is exciting.

But before you draft that resignation letter and start dreaming about your new boss-free life, let’s hit pause for a second.

There’s someone really important we need to talk about.

You.

How well do you really know yourself? Up until now, your work life has probably been shaped by performance reviews and job descriptions (ugh, fun times 😤). But this? This is different. Now, it’s not about meeting a boss’s expectations—it’s about building a business that actually fits you.

Your talents. Your quirks. Your version of success.

Because here’s the truth: business ownership isn’t one-size-fits-all. The business you choose has to work for you just as much as you work on it.

So before you dive in, let’s unpack four things you need to know about yourself to set yourself up for success (and faster and bigger success!).

1. WHY? Your Real Motivation

Let’s start with the big one: Why do you want to be your own boss?

Be honest with yourself—are you running away from something or toward something?

☕ If you’re running away… Maybe it’s a micromanaging boss, a job that drains you, or a soul-crushing commute. (Totally valid reasons, by the way.) But here’s the thing—hating your current situation isn’t enough fuel to power a business long-term.

🚀 If you’re running toward… Maybe you want to build something that excites you. Maybe you crave more freedom, or you see a real problem you’d love to solve. That’s the kind of motivation that’ll keep you going when things get tough (because, spoiler alert: they will).

As Richard Branson put it, “Business opportunities are like buses; there’s always another one coming.” But you don’t want to hop on the first one just because it’s there—you want to pick the one that’s heading to a destination (your new life) that actually excites you.

So, what’s pulling you forward—even on the tough days?

2. Your True North: What Does Success Actually Look Like for YOU?

Saying “I want to be my own boss” is like saying “I want pizza.” Cool… but what kind? Are we talking deep dish? Thin crust? Truffle oil and fancy toppings?

Success looks different for everyone.

Some people want to build a high-growth business with a big team and investors. Others want a small, profitable business that lets them work 20 hours a week and spend more time with family. Both are valid—but if you don’t define what success looks like for you, you might end up creating a business that doesn’t fit your life at all.

So, ask yourself: ✅ Do you want total flexibility or structured work hours? ✅ Do you crave creative freedom, or are you happiest solving technical problems? ✅ Are you driven by money, impact, lifestyle, or something else?

If you don’t define your version of success, you might accidentally build a business that traps you in a different kind of job—one where you’re the boss, but still miserable.

3. Strengths & Blind Spots: What Are You Naturally Good At?

Here’s the deal: your business needs you to drive it forward.

Yes, you can (and will) learn new skills along the way, but if your business requires you to become an expert in something totally outside your wheelhouse—before you can even make money—be careful.

⚡ Example: If you love talking to people and selling, but hate spreadsheets and operations, starting a business that requires complex logistics might be an uphill battle.

💡 Solution: Instead of forcing yourself into a role that drains you, build a business that plays to your strengths—and outsource or automate the stuff that isn’t in your zone of genius.

If you really want to start a business in a field you don’t know well, consider: ✔️ Buying an existing business with training included ✔️ Looking at franchises that provide a playbook ✔️ Partnering with someone who has the skills you lack.

The goal isn’t to do everything yourself—it’s to build something that works with and for you, not against you.

4. Your Growth Mindset: Are You Ready to Learn & Adapt?

One of the biggest myths about entrepreneurship? That you need to have it all figured out before you start.

Spoiler: You won’t.

Business ownership is like signing up for a PhD in personal growth—whether you’re ready for it or not. You’ll be pushed outside your comfort zone, forced to make decisions without perfect information, and (yep) if you take risks as you should, you’ll fail at some things.

But the key difference between successful entrepreneurs and those who burn out?

🧠 A growth mindset.

If you’re willing to: ✔️ Learn from mistakes instead of seeing them as failures ✔️ Stay curious and open to new strategies ✔️ Adapt when things don’t go as planned (because they won’t)

…then you’re already ahead of the game.

Final Thoughts: Are You and Your Business a Good Match?

Being your own boss isn’t just about escaping a job you hate—it’s about creating something that truly fits who you are.

So, take a moment to reflect: 🌟 Are you clear on why you want this? 🌟 Do you know what success looks like for you? 🌟 Are you playing to your strengths (and ready to outsource your weaknesses)?

🌟 Are you ready to learn, adapt, and grow?

If you can answer yes to these, then guess what? You’re already thinking like a business owner.

And I’m here cheering you on every step of the way. 💪
