“Begin with the end in mind”: The second habit in Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.

Your life is your business, and your small business is your livelihood. When you are self-employed and self-sufficient, you have a greater chance to craft your life by design than with a job. But it is only a possibility, not a guarantee. Of course, you have responsibilities to fulfill, as with every company, whether you own or work for it. With purposeful intent, you can avoid the tragedy of picking a business model and discovering after you invest and start it that you are miserable with it.

The surest way to be the creator of your life begins with clarity of who and what matters the most to you. Here we scrutinize the critical components of your ideal life as a business owner- this is where the acronym LIFE+ comes in, discussed in the previous chapter. See the graphic below as a reminder. But having clarity in this equips you to start a business that aligns with your goals and objectives. LIFE+ projected from today to the future is a tool to help you establish a “flight plan” by first identifying the right vehicle (your business) to get you there. Your objective is to set the right destination.

The LIFE+ table below helps you brainstorm and project the important aspects of your LIFE+ in the future. Knowing how you want to live in two years, five years, and ten years will help you select the right business vehicle. Having a crystal clear picture of what you seek, and seek to avoid, immunizes you against bad choices. Let this be your true North. 

We use this framework of lifestyle, income, flexibility, equity, + milestone goals projected from your current life to 10-plus years. As you research businesses or business ideas, you will use these objectives and contrast them against your business(es) of choice. If you realize that the business idea or model you’re picking falls short of one or several of these objectives, you know you’ll have to make a decision. Either you’ll consciously move forward with this business and determine that a particular objective is not as essential and that the other advantages the business offers compensate for the missing one. Or you’ll realize that you need to pick another business. Clarity is our goal. We seek to minimize unpleasant surprises after you have invested significant sums, time, and energy in a venture that disappoints you.
