⚡⏰ When One Door Closes: A Surprising Path to Mid-Career Renewal
I’ve never been one for “woo-woo” explanations, but honestly? Some patterns I’ve seen in my years as a business coach just make you wonder.
Here’s a story that plays out in my coaching practice time and again…
Someone gets that dreaded pink slip from corporate (or government!). At first, there might even be a sigh of relief. A toxic workplace in the rearview mirror? Not the worst thing in the world.
Plus, like many of us, they’ve bounced back before — often landing somewhere with better pay.
But when this happens in midlife? That hits differently.
It’s that moment when we realize our hard-earned experience suddenly faces a cruel math equation: younger + cheaper = preferred. It’s not just another setback — it’s the kind that keeps you up at night, questioning everything.
A job search is never fun, no matter what your age. But here, the rollercoaster becomes emotionally brutal.
Those promising interviews that light you up with hope? Followed by the stomach-dropping silence or rejection. Day after day, firing carefully crafted applications into what feels like a digital black hole.
I’ll never forget my heartbreaking phone call with a senior executive. I could hear and feel his constricted voice as he realized his long career had crashed into the wall of corporate ageism.
This is where we reach that fork in the road.
One door closes, and another cracks open — the door to entrepreneurship.
But here’s the beautiful thing — this isn’t an either/or choice.
You can continue sending out those resumes while also beginning to explore business opportunities. Instead of just looking for jobs, why not start imagining creating them?
And that’s when the magic happens.
Unlike the soul-draining job hunt, researching business ideas actually energizes you! It wakes up parts of your brain that have been on autopilot.
There’s creativity involved. Learning. Possibility. No pressure to buy anything or commit — just the freedom to explore and dream again.
The transformation is honestly remarkable. People who show up in our meeting with slumped shoulders suddenly stand taller. Their eyes are brighter when they smile. Their conversations become magnetic. Even the color of their skin lights up.
Something shifts when they realize they aren’t trapped in a single lane.
Here’s the part that still amazes me: No matter their age, so many clients who start exploring entrepreneurship end up landing great positions!
Sounds crazy, right? But I’ve seen it happen too many times to call it coincidence.
The secret? It’s all in how they show up.
When you know you have options — real options — something shifts in your entire being. That desperate “please hire me” energy disappears. Instead, you walk into interviews relaxed, confident, and engaging authentically. You’re not begging for a lifeline; you’re exploring a potential match.
The lesson is beautifully simple: Don’t stay stuck.
Explore your alternatives.
Just the act of looking beyond the familiar path can transform everything — whether you end up building or buying your own business or landing that dream job you thought was out of reach.
At worst, you’ll discover exciting new possibilities.
At best? You’ll create a life filled with purpose that actually feels like yours.
But here’s something fascinating I’ve noticed: even when clients do land that great corporate gig, something has fundamentally changed inside them.
Once you’ve tasted the possibility of entrepreneurship, it rarely leaves you completely.
Many continue exploring business ideas with their new job providing the perfect safety net — stable income and breathing room to build their launch pad for entrepreneurial success thoughtfully.
This parallel path often turns out to be ideal! The financial pressure is off, allowing for strategic planning and proper market research. When they finally make their entrepreneurial leap, they’re so much better prepared to succeed.
Here’s to building a life we truly love!’
